Okay well firstly I like the imagery used here to describe Matt:

Maybe he was a little more reckless, maybe the grins that tore at the edges of his mouth were a little more wild.


It's violent, almost grotesque: grins "tearing" Matt's mouth, as if simply smiling is painful for him. It gives the impression that his happiness isn't genuine, that his mindset is one where even his smiles resemble scars. Though at this point we haven't been told explicitly that Matt was suicidal, it begins to dawn on us purely from the imagery brought up by this line, making the revelation of his suicide seem chillingly inevitable to us as well as how it was to his friends.

The theme of justice runs throughout - and by the end of the fic we have been shown that the justice the fic hinges its first line on does not exist. Though we are never told why Matt let himself be killed, we can extrapolate from this that the lack of justice he was surrounded by is part of the reason. The outlook is bleak, suggesting that Matt's death had no purpose: it has not brought the justice he dedicated both his day and night to fighting for to the world.
